British Guiana Post Offices: De-Kinderen

De Kinderen, East Coast Demerara

The De Kinderen Post Office, situated on the East Coast of Demerara, was opened in 1850 at the local police station and served within the East Coast Demerara Postal District, approximately 27 miles from Georgetown. By 1901, the office had been moved to Quakers Hall, and on April 1, 1909, it was upgraded to a money order office.

On November 1, 1918, the post office relocated to Cottage, about one mile to the east. It was later downgraded to a postal agency on August 1, 1929.

The post office initially assigned the coded postmark “E6C.”

The following are the Date Stamps used at De Kinderen with EKD prior to 22 January 1901, the day marking the end of the reign of Queen Victoria. In addition to listing the Panda Type #, for reference, we also list the T&H Type from The Postage Stamps and Postal History of British Guiana by Townsend & Howe, the Type and referenced page from The Postal History of British Guiana by Edward B. Proud, and the referenced pages from British Guiana Coded Postmarks – Study paper No 3 by Michael Rego, for code-marks.
