British Guiana Post Offices: Boerasirie

Boerasirie, West Coast Demerara

The Boerasirie Post Office, located in the West Coast Demerara Postal District, was opened in 1860 at J & C Harrison’s store, with J. Harrison appointed as postmaster on May 1, 1860. The office served the area until it was transferred to Metenmeerzorg and officially closed on November 1, 1890.

Although the Boerasirie post office marks continued to exist until 1895, they were no longer used at Metenmeerzorg after the transfer. The Boerasirie River, which forms the boundary between Essequibo and Demerara counties, had a market by the bridge, further underscoring the post office’s importance in the local community.

The following are the Date Stamps used at Boerasirie with EKD prior to 22 January 1901, the day marking the end of the reign of Queen Victoria. In addition to listing the Panda Type #, for reference, we also list the T&H Type from The Postage Stamps and Postal History of British Guiana by Townsend & Howe, the Type and referenced page from The Postal History of British Guiana by Edward B. Proud, and the referenced pages from British Guiana Coded Postmarks – Study paper No 3 by Michael Rego, for code-marks.
