British Guiana Post Offices: Brahn

The Brahn Post Office, located on the West Coast of Berbice, opened in 1860 at the local police station. Situated about 14 miles from Rosignol, it served the West Coast Berbice Postal District. The office may have used the coded postmark “WCB,” though this is considered extremely rare. The Brahn Post Office remained in operation until its closure on February 1, 1896.

This Brahn Circular Date Stamp (C.D.S.) is a Panda Type E2 postmark. The Panda Type E2 is Single Ring (S.R.), 26.5 mm. American Type. 3 line date (3 L.D.) B.G. at foot. Known with year missing.

The Panda Type E2.7 is cataloged as a Type 2 and listed as “Very Rare” in The Postage Stamps and Postal History of British Guiana by Townsend & Howe. It also states that “No copy seen showing year.”

The Postal History of British Guiana By Edward B. Proud lists the EKD as 6 May 1881 and LKD as 21 Nov 1882. In British Guiana Village Postmarks: An Update on Townsend & Howe by Peter Ford, Ford denotes the EKD as 12 May 187? and confirms Proud’s LKD.

This Brahn Circular Date Stamp (C.D.S.) is a Panda Type E12 postmark. The Panda Type E12 is Single Ring (S.R.) 22 – 23.5 mm with Protective Corners. 2 L.D. with Y.I.F. British Guiana at foot.
